Late Night Host Fight

18 Jan

Can’t we all just get along?

The following, in point form, are my thoughts on the Conan – Leno debacle:

– They should have given Conan more time to fill the Late Night shoes.

– There is overwhelming support for Conan (team “coco”) from viewers and celebrities alike.

– Perhaps Conan (and/or NBC) should think about the 200+ people who work for him on the show that may cease to exist when the show ceases to exist.

– Perhaps the culture of late night is changing, no? The late night lineup may need a little bit of a makeover. Dare I say, some estrogen? Or are women only suited for daytime? Chelsie Handler is doing just fine at night. A network should give that woman more power. Also, how many women are writers on these shows? Next to none. [ On the topic – Lynn Harris of Salon.com puts it best] Sad.

Is it too late to bring Conan back? For NBC, probably, but I’ve heard rumors of the show resurfacing on FOX or on cable television.

In the meantime, I’ll continue to sit on the fence watching the war between network and our favourite ginger.

And to all parties involved, while you’re pouting because of bad ratings and “low” pay, people are dying / starving to death / left homeless in Haiti. Chew on that.

my general distaste for newscorp notwithstanding, fox is killing it right now… with a great mix of quality drama and reality, they’re raking in the viewers while the big 3 are suffering hard. where they fail is after primetime… their news sucks and with all due respect to wanda sykes, they have nothing to hold anyone after that. so if i’m … See Morethem, i sign conan in a heartbeat. you’re not going to have hoards of people follow him from nbc, but he’s good enough to develop a new following over there quickly if you give him a chance.

    HE’S your favourite ginger? Ouch…

Seriously though, this whole thing is a real mess. Conan’s actually keenly aware of what this is going to do to all of his staff who uprooted to California. But the main point is the network has shot themselves in the foot, Leno’s coming out looking like the bad guy, and Conan will be a hot ticket item no matter what he chooses to do
